"Easy Classical Schedule eliminates the time-consuming task of book/curriculum selection and also decreases the likelihood of unnecessary purchases. I can truly focus on understanding the subjects thoroughly and enjoy learning with my child." ~Sherri W. Grifton, NC
Read The Well-Trained Mind to aid you in understanding the framework of classical education at home. Shepherding a Child’s Heart and Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining and Bad Attitudes will give you a wonderful guide to raising children with hearts to honor God. Shepherding a Child’s Heart is the theory and Say Goodbye to Whining... is the practical application of the theory.
These are the books scheduled for Bible in Kindergarten. These books can be used this year if you think your child is ready. He can begin memorizing the Bible verses and catechism questions.
You may begin using these books to teach your child to read this year. Make sure you take your time. Some children are ready to begin reading at age 4 and others are not ready until age 5 or 6. Do not push your child. Wait until he is ready and you will encourage a love for reading. We recommend that you start with Teach Your Child to Read in Preschool and Kindergarten. If your child is not reading fluently by First Grade we switch to Phonics Pathways for variety and to meet the needs of different learners.
Only use Spelling Workout if your child is an early reader. This workbook is geared toward the kindergartener or first grader. Make sure you take your time and don't push your child. If you find yourself reading everything to your child, but she enjoys it keep plugging along. But if you are both getting frustrated, put the book away and pick it up a month later or wait until next year. If your child is not reading, or gets frustrated with reading use 1-2-3 Reading and Writing and Alphabet Fun and Games.
Start this only if your child is ready. Most children this age do not have the fine motor skill necessary to form letters. This is the handwriting recommended for Kindergarten.
Purchase Saxon Math K (Kindergarten is more of a preschool text book). If you are unsure your child is ready have him take a placement test. Purchase the teacher's manual, the student workbooks and Math meeting book as well as the math manipulatives. Another great book to use is 1-2-3 Math. If you use 1-2-3 Math you can still move into Saxon Math 1 next year.
No formal History or Geography program in Pre-K but take opportunities to instruct your child in regard to current events, or when you are using a map or following directions, etc.
No formal Science program, but go on field trips to science museums, ponds, parks, creeks, etc.
Take trips to the Library. Attend story hour at Barnes and Noble or at your local library for preschool children. In preparation for next year you may purchase the resources recommended under literature for kindergarten age children. A lot of those stories are appropriate for this age and will help your child get used to sitting and listening to stories.

Your job as a parent is not just to keep your child happy. You're raising a future grown-up who needs to be able to deal with grown-up matters. Teach your children how to handle money while they are young, and they won't make costly mistakes later in life.
