Kindergarten Curriculum List

Below is a list of the books needed to complete the Kindergarten Schedule. Since we are dedicated to keeping your costs down, we have created links to the best priced book sellers. You can purchase the books on Christianbook.com or Alibris.com by clicking the links below. Or you can link to the WorldCat website which provides a list of the local libraries that contain each book. You just enter your zip code and WorldCat will generate a list of libraries, containing the book, that are close to you.

General Resources

We have found these resources helpful for establishing a great foundation for your homeschool.

Chores

Your job as a parent is not primarily to keep your child "happy," but rather to train him up to be a responsible adult. One way to begin to accomplish this goal is to give your children responsibilities around the house. Doing chores and getting paid for a job well done, helps the child to make the connection between working hard and making money. Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Jr. is a great resource for helping you to do this.

Bible

These books are scheduled throughout the kindergarten year. Big Truths for Little Kids teaches the catechism with stories illustrating the answers to each of the questions. The kindergartener will make it through half of this book, finishing the rest in first grade. My ABC Bible Verses also teaches through stories, so the child doesn't merely memorize words, but rather learns the meaning of the verses he is memorizing.

Phonics/Reading

These books provide an excellent foundation for the beginning reader. Do not push your child. Wait until he is ready, and you will encourage a love of reading. If you are not sure if your child is ready to read, click here.

Spelling

Spelling Workout A is geared toward the kindergartener or first grader. If your child is eager to begin with spelling this year, but has not yet started reading, go ahead and give it a try. At the beginning of the year, you may find you are almost doing the lesson for him. But by the end of the year, he will catch on and will be working more independently. Teaching the child spelling helps reinforce what he is learning with phonics.

Handwriting

This is a great handwriting program. The instruction manual has a couple of pages of instruction for each level in the program. Only purchase the instruction manual if you haven't purchased it in a previous grade.

Math

Saxon math is an excellent "scripted" math program, that is very easy to teach, even for the math phobics out there. We recommend you use Saxon 1 for Kindergarten. Saxon K is more of a preschool math program. If you are unsure if your child is ready have him take a placement test. Make sure to purchase the Teacher's Manual, Workbooks, Fact Cards, and Math Manipulatives.

Art

Teach Art is easy to use, even for those with no artistic ability. The first half of this book is scheduled this year.

Physical Education
This physical education guide is scheduled throughout the year to ensure you and your child are getting adequate amounts of exercise. Daily muscular strength and fitness assignments as well as bi-weekly aerobic exercises are scheduled throughout the year.

Literature

We have scheduled stories from each of these books for you to read to your child throughout the year. "Reading Time" will become one of your child's favorite times of the day. Also, take the time to go to story hour at your local library or at one of your favorite book sellers.

Science

We do not recommend you purchase a formal science program this year. Make the time, instead, to go on field trips to science museums, ponds, parks or the library in search of fun science learning opportunities.

History

We do not recommend a formal history program this year. We do however schedule the Beginning Geography books listed below to give your child an introduction to geography.
